“As the 太阳城网赌平台 community rises to the challenge of confronting racial injustice in America, the Schiller Institute is taking on the battle against environmental racism,斯坦伯格说。. “As one of the links in the chain of structural racism, environmental racism reaches deep into the lifeblood of communities, causing an accumulation of environmental harms that threaten the 健康 of residents, 抢夺他们的开放空间, 和 eroding the value 和 cohesion of neighborhoods.

“席勒太阳城官网所, in fulfilling its mission to address complex social problems in a holistic 和 deeply engaged manner, is undertaking a concerted effort to explore the origins of environmental racism, examine its role as a manifestation of structural racism, underst和 和 acknowledge the full extent of environmental racism's damage to communities of color, 和, 最重要的是, 装备BC学生, 教师, 和有洞察力的盟友, 技术, 和 opportunities to actively work to combat the scourge of environmental racism.”

Provost 和 Dean of Faculties David Quigley said that this Schiller Institute event reflects the expertise that 斯坦伯格 has brought to the University since being named executive director in the spring of 2020, 和 is in line with the vision of alumnus Phil Schiller ’82 和 his wife Kim Gassett-Schiller, whose $25 million lead gift launched the Institute in 2017.

“Environmental scholarship will be a pillar of the Schiller Institute, 和 our commitment to linking scientific work with ethics 和 social contexts has led to this focus on the unequal experience of environmental degradation in urban communities around the nation,奎格利说.  “Laura 斯坦伯格 has brought together a wide range of colleagues from across campus to plan for this 和 future events on this important contemporary topic.”

The Schiller Institute is the centerpiece of the 150,000 square-foot science facility that is under construction on the University’s Middle 校园 和 will open in late 2021. The institute is committed to addressing critical issues in the areas of energy, 健康, 还有环境.

Forum for Racial Justice in America inaugural director Vince Rougeau said that the event, which will close out the Forum’s fall schedule, will address a societal threat that too often victimizes people of color but is largely ignored by policy makers 和 political leaders.

“Study after study has shown that there are deep racial disparities when it comes to exposure to environmental hazards, 自然的和人为的,”鲁高说.  “The concept of environmental racism reminds us that racial biases embedded in the structure of society are critical factors in determining who is most likely to suffer harm from environmental degradation, 和 addressing this harm is a critical part of the work that 太阳城网赌平台 plans to do through the Forum on Racial Justice in America.”
